Latest raspberry pi 2 projects Video : My RetroPie Emulation Project/Setup

Video Rating: / 5

I picked up a Raspberry Pi 2 and have playing with the RetroPie distribution/project. It’s a solid out of the box solution to controller-only emulation on a TV, but there are a lot of things that have to be customized out of the box.

If you want to do something like this yourself, you can pick up a Pi2 from Amazon. When I ordered mine I got this “starter kit” that came with a bunch of useful stuff – a micro SD card, USB Wi-fi adapter (important if you want to not have to plug your Pi in to a wired network – and it’s compatible with RetroPie out of the box! Bonus!), an AC adapter, a protective case, a heat sync for overclocking/keeping your Pi cool and stable, and an HDMI cable.

I also picked up two of these USB SNES controllers, which so far have been working awesome:

And a 32GB micro SDHC card (in the video I said 16GB, that was wrong):

To get the RetroPie software, and a bunch of how-to’s, a helpful forum, and a nice Wiki, head over to the RetroPie home page:

A couple of useful links I found when performing some of the advanced configurations… XML files for the game lists for each system, along with scraped box art for each system is located in this directory:

/home/pi/.emulationstation/

I found these links invaluable for setting up the Genesis emulator for 6-button controls:

This link explains how to get rid of the RetroPie menu from the EmulationStation screen, leaving only video game systems (helpful if you have others using your system and you don’t want them to be able to get in and make changes with the controller):

And finally, if you have the same controllers as I do, this is the file that you can manually edit with nano from the command line to disable certain hot key features (I disabled save state, load state, and the one that brings up the RetroArch menu, since damage can easily be done in there):

/opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads/USB,2-axis_8-button_gamepad__.cfg

All other configs for all other controllers are located in that directory as well, so if you are using a different controller, just edit your applicable .cfg file! Helpful hit – don’t delete lines if you want to remove the function, just put a # in front of the line to comment it out – that way it’s easily fixed. Also, I’d recommend making a backup of any file that you manually edit yourself.

Enjoy!
